| Tesla and its CEO, Elon Musk, have accused the US Securities and Exchange Commission of improperly targeting them |
Tesla CEO Elon Musk on Thursday attacked the US Securities and Exchange Commission for unjustifiably targeting him and the company by conducting an investigation, describing him as "severe", to punish him for being an outspoken critic of the US government.
Elon Musk's message
Musk's accusation to the SEC came in a letter to Manhattan District Judge Alison Nathan, who oversaw the settlement of Elon Musk's 2018 tweet case .
"It appears that the SEC is targeting Musk and Tesla with a largely relentless investigation, because Musk remains an outspoken critic of the government... Enough is enough," Musk and Tesla's attorney, Alex Spiro, wrote in the letter.
The US Securities and Exchange Commission has not commented on the letter at the time of writing.
Musk sued for fraud
In 2018, Musk's tweet about delisting the company and turning it into a private company prompted the SEC to sue Musk for fraud.
But the matter was settled, and Musk and Tesla agreed to pay a fine of $ 40 million, and Musk stepped down in 2018 from the presidency of the company for 3 years, while retaining the position of CEO and his seat on the board of directors.
But Musk confirmed , on February 2, that his tweet in 2018, was "totally honest" and that investors who claim the message was a scam are wrong.
Tesla disclosed on February 7 that it had received a subpoena from the Securities and Exchange Commission regarding its compliance with that settlement.
Elon Musk is the richest man in the world with a fortune of $249.3 billion according to Forbes real-time estimates dated February 17, 2022.
Musk made his fortune by founding several companies, including Tesla, SpaceX, Neuralink, and The Boring Company .
